The ‘Core’ Days

The core days are part of the Summer BushMoot only, they’re a group of days that contain all the workshops. people can attend just for these workshop days if they want to.

The ‘core’ days…

In the middle of the two-week Summer BushMoot is a set of days that we call the ‘core’. This is to show that they’re not just relaxed camping days but days full of activities and workshops. This is the focused skill-sharing period of the Summer BushMoot. It’s possible to buy event tickets that cover these core days and not the whole event.

A typical core day breaks down like this:

10:00 Morning meeting: This is optional, but we encourage everyone to attend this meeting as it helps set up the day’s activities and helps communicate any news, workshop info, and the awarding of any awards/prizes, etc.
At the morning meetings, everyone gets the opportunity to ask questions about workshops, activities, the site etc. You also get to request a workshop that you want to do, so if you want to learn some knots, ponnassing fish, art, axe carving, using a fire piston or anything else you would like to learn or practice, the morning meeting is the place to speak up, and we’ll do our best to make it happen. (we’ve even done hair braiding on request)

WORKSHOPS - Skill and knowledge sharing

Workshop sessions are generally morning and afternoon; sometimes they’re outside these times if the workshops or the availability of the person running it dictates a different time. ie, nighttime photography doesn’t work well at 3pm.

  • Workshops are run by people volunteering to share their knowledge and skills; please respect their time and efforts.

  • We usually run 8-10 workshops at a time.

  • Workshops are listed on the whiteboard the evening before so that you can decide which you’d like to attend.

  • Please note (from the board) the details of the workshops, where they’ll take place, who’ll be running them, whether there's a fee to cover materials, what you need to bring, etc. You can always ask extra questions at the morning meetings.

  • Share what you know as well; in workshops, everyone is here to learn, including the instructors.

10:30 Workshops start (Morning): You turn up where the workshops are happening, and you get stuck in! Or, you relax, practice what you’ve learned or do something else.

Lunchtime: There’s no set time for lunch, we suggest you grab some food in between workshops; sometimes you’ll have plenty of time and sometimes you might be rushing.

14:00 Workshops start (Afternoon): You turn up where the workshops are happening, and you get stuck in! Or, you relax, practice what you’ve learned or do something else.

Evenings: There are sometimes activities in the evenings, such as workshops/speakers or social activities that you can join in with, or you can relax at your camp.

The Monday in the Middle

This is a relaxed day that allows you to take a breather, practice skills, ask people for advice, chat, or have adventures of your own. There are some workshops and activities going on, but we make this a bit more of a ‘chill’ day.

Monday runs like this:

  • Morning Meet

  • Activities

  • Relax

  • Evening communal mealtime

  • Band

  • Fireside chatting

The Evening Communal Meal: Historically, we had a big ‘munch and mingle’ type meal where everyone bought a pot, and we put them all together on the tables, and then we tried each other’s foods, be they bread, soups, stews, roasts, rice etc. We may bring this back after stopping it during COVID-19; at the moment, though, it’s a case of bringing your own meal for you/your family to eat, and we’ll all eat in the same area while the band is playing during the evening. It creates a lovely relaxed community atmosphere that’s a hallmark of the BushMoots.

It’s always been about the community and sharing with each other.

20 years of Skill sharing

"From a first time noob, the journey started with nervous anticipation and ended with a glum feeling of returning to 'normality' if you can call it that.
I have so many good memories in between!"
