Spoon carving at the Moot

This is a great way to learn wood carving and safety and come away with a useful spoon that's all yours!

There is nothing like sitting around the campfire, carving a spoon, or other wooden items, with likeminded people.

It can be a magical experience, bringing to life an item that you have made yourself from a tactile material that's found all around us.

Spoon Carving for many people today can be their introduction to knife craft with all its different skills and safety aspects. A gateway to understanding natural materials and tool use.

The Bushmoot might be your first chance to have a go at carving your own spoon, or your opportunity to improve your skills and learn new techniques, while in an enjoyable and safe environment.

During the workshop, you will learn how to perform simple and safe knife techniques like the push cut, chest lever cut and reinforced thumb cut. How to choose suitable wood, learn about the structure of spoons explaining both strengths and weaknesses of the wooden spoon and how to finish off your spoon using various methods.

After you have carved some spoons, you might want to have a go at carving other useful items, such as butter spreaders, forks, bowls, kuksa, plates, ladles and pots. Or be more adventurous and move on to wood sprites, figurines and such, when it comes to wood carving the only limit is your imagination.

For many people, this the start of many new adventures, I know it was mine.
